Vintage Tools 1890s NPRR Rotary Chisel  maul end, 1890s NPRR Rotary Chisel

1890's NPRR Rotary Chisel. Here's something for you railroad enthusiasts! This little gem was rescued from the cab of an aging Northern Pacific Railroad rotary snowplow that was being scrapped in Seattle, WA. in 1944. This chisel and others like it were used by the brakeman to knock and chisel accumulated ice from the blades and blade housing of the rotary snowplow. It is estimated that it dates to the 1890's, as seen from various Period railroading sketch journals. The entire chisel head looks to be hand-forged. The maul end has an impact mushroom as seen in photo II. The stamp on the underside says, "N.P.R.R.Co", altho' the "N' is lightly readable. It appears to a have a makeshift handle of unknown age. The length is 10 1/4", and the width, 6 1/4".

This chisel has seen a lot of use, but looks to be in very good condition. Too bad it can't talk. Oh, the stories it could tell!
